MAT 125: Web Design 1: Fundamentals: COMPETENCIES

The MiraCosta MAT Program has developed a developed a set of criteria known as "competencies" in order to evaluate all students on an equal basis. Each exercise or project has a set of skills and requirements which are assigned a numeric value based on the evaluation criteria. The value will vary depending on the complexity of the project. Each project and exercise sheet has a specific value assigned to it. The exercises do not have as much value as the midterm or the final. Total points for the semester are 650.

Just turning in an exercise and doing the minimum requirements each time is not enough to deserve an 'A'. So let's talk about what I am expecting....

'A' equals Awesome.

To get an 'A' in this class, you have to impress me, knock my socks off... How do you do this? Simple. You need to end up with a semester point total of between 585 and 650. To do this you must meet the Minimum Course Competencies stated below as well as the minimum requirements on each project sheet, PLUS you must:

  • consistently PUSH your work to the next level
  • CREATIVELY solve problems and find solutions
  • NEVER settle for average
  • always turn your projects in ON TIME
  • TRY things above and beyond the requirements of the project and often succeed
  • have IMPECCABLE craftsmanship
  • ALWAYS keep a current backup of all your work
  • HELP OUT your fellow classmates
  • exhibit HONESTY and a sense of good ethics

and above and beyond all this, you REALLY WANT TO BE THE BEST.

OK, what about a 'B'? They're a bit easier. You need to end up with a semester point total of between 520 and 584. To do this you must meet the Minimum Course Competencies stated below as well as the minimum requirements on each project sheet, PLUS you must:

  • try to push your work to the next level
  • try creative solutions to problem solving
  • don't settle for average
  • turn your projects in by the deadline
  • try things above and beyond the requirements of the project
  • practice very good craftsmanship
  • ALWAYS keep a current backup of all your work
  • occasionally help out your fellow classmates
  • exhibit honesty and a sense of good ethics

Minimum Course Competencies
So, to achieve a grade of 'C', you need to attain a semester point total between 455 and 519. You do this by meeting the minimum requirements for each exercise which are stated specifically on each project sheet. Plus you will need to:

  • turn in your Final Project on time
  • participate in the Final Critique
  • save all your files in the correct formats as listed in the Final Output section of each exercise sheet
  • Use the File Server to properly store, retrieve and edit your projects
  • file your finished projects in the correct Homework folder
  • keep a backup copy of your work.

A point total below 454 earns you a grade of 'D' or 'F'. If this happens you may want to reevaluate your priorities or consider a different field of study.
